Description: |
Eurofins Scientific is a life sciences company operating internationally to provide a comprehensive range of analytical support services drawing on the latest developments in biotechnology. The Group specialises in delivering analytical testing services to clients from a wide range of industries including the pharmaceutical, food and environmental sectors. Created in 1982, Eurofins Scientific S.A. started its activity thanks to the success of a unique technique known as SNIF-NMR®. The SNIF-NMR®, technology was developed by the parents of the company founders, Gerard and Maryvonne Martin, both professors at the University of Nantes, and was filed for patent in 1982 by the university. Eurofins Scientific initially acquired the exclusive licence to market this patent and in 1997, purchased the patent from the "Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique". With over 2,000 staff in more than 40 laboratories across 16 countries and a portfolio of over 10,000 analytical methods for proving the authenticity, origin, safety, identity, and purity of biological substances, Eurofins Scientific is already a leading global provider of bioanalytical services. Expertise: |
The development of methods to determine the authenticity of food products has been the main focus of the work carried out in Eurofins Nantes laboratory since it was created. Starting with the application of the SNIF-NMR® method and other stable isotope to determine the authenticity of fruit-based products, flavours, alcoholic beverages, honey, vegetable oils, etc. the laboratory now has a wide analytical expertise in compositional analyses, separation techniques, and in biomolecular methods. In 1994 - 1997, Eurofins coordinated the FAIM project (Food Authenticity : Issues and Methodologies, EU contract n° AIR3-CT94-2452) which was the forerunner to the TRACE project. [] |

WP 3 - Species Origin Methods (Molecular Biology)
In the Analytical Tools Group (ATG), Eurofins is involved in WP3 termed Species Origin Methods (SOM). In the initial phase, authentic material of Farro della Garfagnana is to be sampled from Italy. This is a specific breeding line of Triticium dicoccum and defined as product of Protected Designated Origin (PDO). To compare and differentiate other, closely related species and sub-species from this line, a comparison with other cereals like wheat, rye, barely and oat will be performed. In a first approach, the optimal extraction procedure for DNA from the above-mentioned cereals will be identified. Secondly, a consensus PCR using probes will be performed to differentiate the species and subspecies mentioned above. After this, a feasibility study to differentiate species using SCAR as well as RAPD PCR techniques will be performed. Depending on the results of consensus PCR and SCAR/RAPD studies, optimisation of the best method will be performed and a quantitative approach attempted to determine the amount of adulteration of Farro della Garfagnana with other cereal types.
WP 1 - Food Origin Mapping
Eurofins will contribute to the stable isotope analyses of the light bioelements of the commodities chosen in the project and will also carry out the sample collection in France.
Project Management : Member of the Project Management Board and the Scientific Committee.
Analytical Tool Group leader; |
